Build My Packing ListThe One-Bag Philosophy
For weekends, one bag is all you need. A 20-30 litre backpack or small duffel fits everything for two nights and keeps you mobile. The trick is ruthless editing - pack only what you will definitely use, not what you might use.
Money-Saving Tip
The test: if you would not be annoyed having to buy it at your destination, you probably do not need to pack it.
Choosing Your Bag
- Backpack (20-30L): Best for mobility, hands-free travel
- Weekender duffel: More structured, easier to pack
- Small cabin bag: Wheels if you prefer rolling
- Tote bag plus small backpack: Separate day bag
- Avoid: Full-size suitcases for 2 nights
Documents & Wallet
- Driving licence or passport (depending on destination)
- Bank cards (one backup in separate location)
- Small amount of cash
- Hotel confirmation on phone
- Car breakdown cover details if driving
- Train tickets downloaded or printed
The 3-3-3 Clothing Rule
For a weekend, use the 3-3-3 rule: 3 tops, 3 bottoms (including what you wear), 3 underwear. Everything should mix and match.
- 1 outfit worn for travel (jeans/trousers, t-shirt, jumper)
- 1 casual outfit for day exploring
- 1 slightly smarter option for evening
- 3 sets of underwear
- 3 pairs of socks
- Pyjamas (or sleep in t-shirt)
- Swimwear (if hotel has pool or you are near coast)
- Light jacket or cardigan
Family Tip
Wear your heaviest and bulkiest items during travel. Jeans, boots, jacket - all worn, not packed. This frees up significant bag space.
Footwear - Maximum Two Pairs
Shoes are space killers. Two pairs maximum - one worn, one packed.
- Worn: Comfortable walking shoes or boots
- Packed: Sandals, flip-flops, or smart shoes for evening
- Skip the third pair - you do not need it for 48 hours
Toiletries - The Hotel Test
Hotels provide basics. Only pack what they will not supply or what you specifically need.
- Toothbrush and small toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Medications
- Contact lenses and solution
- Minimal makeup (one palette does it all)
- Razor
- Lip balm
- Skip: Shampoo, conditioner, soap, hairdryer - hotels have them
Tip
Solid toiletries (shampoo bars, solid deodorant) avoid liquid restrictions and never leak. Game changer for light packing.
Electronics
- Phone and charger
- Power bank (keeps you going all day)
- Earphones
- E-reader (lighter than books)
- Skip the laptop unless you absolutely need it
Day Bag Essentials
If your main bag is a backpack, you can use it during the day. Otherwise, pack a foldable tote.
- Foldable tote or small day bag
- Sunglasses
- Reusable water bottle
- Snacks for journey
- Portable umbrella or rain jacket
- Book or e-reader
Seasonal Adjustments
Add or swap items based on season and destination.
- Summer: Sunscreen, hat, lighter fabrics, swimwear
- Winter: Warm hat, gloves, scarf, thermal layer
- Rain: Packable waterproof jacket, waterproof bag for electronics
- Beach: Towel (unless hotel provides), flip-flops, beach bag
Packing by Weekend Type
Adjust your base list depending on what kind of weekend you are having.
- Country pub: Wellies, warm layers, binoculars, walking shoes
- Coastal escape: Swimwear, beach towel, windproof layer, flip-flops
- City culture: Smarter evening outfit, comfortable walking shoes, day bag
- Active adventure: Sports gear, quick-dry clothes, trainers
- Spa break: Swimwear, flip-flops, book, minimal everything else
Family Tip
Spa weekends are the ultimate packing win - you spend most of the time in a robe. Pack barely anything.
What NOT to Pack
Ruthless editing is the secret. Leave these behind:
- Just in case clothes - you will not wear them in 48 hours
- Multiple outfit options per occasion
- Full-size toiletries
- Books (plural) - one or an e-reader only
- Laptop unless working
- Bulky hairdryer
- Too many shoes
- Jewellery or valuables you would worry about
- Anything you have not used in the last month
Money-Saving Tip
Lay out everything, then put back at least a third. If you forgot something important, shops exist at your destination.
Packing Technique
- Roll clothes to prevent creases and save space
- Use packing cubes (even for weekends)
- Fill shoes with socks or small items
- Put heavy items near your back (if backpacking)
- Keep toiletries in waterproof pouch
- Layer strategically - first in, last out
Weekend Away with Kids
Children make minimalist packing harder, but not impossible. Apply the same principles, just expect slightly more.
- 2-3 outfits per child (one spare for spills)
- Pyjamas
- Comfortable shoes only (one pair)
- Favourite small toy or comfort item
- Tablet with downloads for car journey
- Snacks - endless snacks
- Wipes (useful well beyond nappy years)
- Nappies and changing supplies if needed
- Swimwear if hotel has pool
- Skip: Multiple toy options, outfit variety, things they might want
Family Tip
Children do not need outfit options for 48 hours. They genuinely do not care and will happily wear the same comfortable clothes twice.
Last Minute Check
Before walking out the door, verify:
- Phone, wallet, keys
- Charger packed
- Passport/licence if needed
- Hotel confirmation accessible
- Windows closed, heating adjusted
- Bins emptied if staying away
- Pet arrangements confirmed
- One layer accessible for the journey
