3 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary
Discover Danish hygge, stunning design, and Nordic cuisine in the happiest capital
Copenhagen is a city that effortlessly blends historic charm with cutting-edge design, world-class cuisine with cosy neighbourhood cafes, and royal palaces with relaxed waterfront living. Over three days, you'll discover why Danes consistently rank among the happiest people on Earth. From the colourful townhouses of Nyhavn to the whimsical rides of Tivoli Gardens, this itinerary covers the essential Copenhagen experience while leaving room for spontaneous hygge moments. The city is remarkably walkable and bike-friendly, making it perfect for families and solo travellers alike.
Day 1: Classic Copenhagen & Tivoli Magic
Start your Copenhagen adventure with the city's most iconic sights before ending with an evening at the legendary Tivoli Gardens. This day balances culture, history, and pure fun.
Day 1: Classic Copenhagen & Tivoli Magic
Breakfast at Torvehallerne
Begin at Copenhagen's beloved food market, housed in two glass halls near Norreport station. Grab a coffee from Coffee Collective, fresh pastries from Laura's Bakery, and perhaps some traditional smorrebrod for an early lunch. The market buzzes with locals doing their weekend shopping.
Rosenborg Castle & Gardens
Walk to this Renaissance castle built by King Christian IV, housing the Danish Crown Jewels. The castle itself is a treasure trove of royal history, but the surrounding King's Garden is equally lovely for a stroll.
Nyhavn Waterfront
Stroll down Stroget, one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets, towards the iconic colourful harbour of Nyhavn. These 17th-century townhouses, once home to Hans Christian Andersen, now house restaurants and bars. Grab a hotdog from a harbour cart for an authentic Danish lunch.
Canal Tour
Board a canal boat from Nyhavn for a one-hour cruise past the Little Mermaid, Opera House, Black Diamond library, and Christianshavn's charming canals. It's the best way to see Copenhagen from the water and rest your legs.
Amalienborg Palace
Watch the changing of the guard at the royal residence if you time it for noon, or simply admire the four identical rococo palaces surrounding the octagonal courtyard. The palace museum offers insight into royal Danish life.
Rest & Refresh at Hotel
Head back to your accommodation to rest before the evening's main event. Copenhagen can be tiring on foot, and you'll want energy for Tivoli.
Tivoli Gardens Evening
Enter the world's second-oldest amusement park as the lights come on. Opened in 1843, Tivoli is pure magic - part amusement park, part garden, part concert venue. Ride the wooden roller coaster, the vintage carousel, or simply wander the illuminated paths. Friday nights feature fireworks in summer.
Copenhagen Card
The Copenhagen Card (from £60/72 hours) includes unlimited public transport and free entry to 80+ attractions including Tivoli, Rosenborg, and canal tours. With this itinerary, you'll save significantly over three days.
Day 2: Design, Food & Alternative Copenhagen
Today explores Copenhagen's world-famous design heritage, its revolutionary food scene, and the free-spirited neighbourhood of Christiania. This is modern Copenhagen at its best.
Day 2: Design, Food & Alternative Copenhagen
Design Museum Denmark
Housed in a former hospital, this museum showcases Danish design from Viking craftsmanship to contemporary furniture. Understand why Danish design conquered the world - and pick up some inspiration for your home.
The Little Mermaid
Make the pilgrimage to Edvard Eriksen's bronze sculpture, sitting on her rock since 1913. She's smaller than expected but beautifully positioned overlooking the harbour. Walk along the Langelinie promenade.
Lunch at Reffen Street Food
Take the harbour bus to this massive street food market in Refshaleoen. Over 50 stalls serve everything from Korean tacos to Danish smoked fish. Industrial setting, waterfront views, utterly delicious.
Freetown Christiania
This self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood has been a social experiment since 1971. Walk the main street Pusher Street (ignore the open cannabis market), admire the creative architecture, visit art galleries, and absorb the alternative atmosphere. It's fascinating urban sociology.
Church of Our Saviour
Climb the external spiral staircase of this baroque church for panoramic Copenhagen views. The 400-step climb narrows as you go, ending at a golden globe. Not for the faint-hearted but unforgettable.
Christianshavn Canal Walk
This charming neighbourhood feels like Amsterdam with its houseboats and waterside cafes. Grab a drink at one of the canal-side bars and watch boats pass by.
Dinner in Vesterbro
This formerly rough neighbourhood is now Copenhagen's hippest district. Try Kodbyens Fiskebar for excellent seafood in a converted meatpacking warehouse, or grab gourmet burgers at Gasoline Grill.
Cycling in Copenhagen
Rent bikes from Donkey Republic (app-based, from £8/day) or your hotel. Copenhagen has 450km of cycle lanes and drivers expect cyclists everywhere. Kids' bikes and child seats are available - this is genuinely the best way to explore.
Day 3: Royal History & Neighbourhood Charm
Your final day mixes royal grandeur with local neighbourhood life, ending with time for shopping and a special farewell dinner.
Day 3: Royal History & Neighbourhood Charm
Breakfast at Original Coffee
Start in Norrebro, Copenhagen's most diverse neighbourhood. This local favourite serves excellent eggs and the city's best flat whites. The area has a vibrant weekend market feel.
Assistens Cemetery
Don't skip this! Copenhageners use this cemetery as a park - jogging, picnicking, sunbathing among the graves. Find Hans Christian Andersen and Soren Kierkegaard's resting places. It sounds morbid but it's actually joyful.
Norrebro Street Art & Vintage
Wander the side streets for impressive murals and vintage shops. Jaegersborggade is particularly charming with ceramicists, coffee roasters, and a craft beer bar.
Lunch at Paper Island (Holmen)
Copenhagen Food Collective offers excellent food court dining in a waterfront setting. Choose from Danish, Asian, American and more while enjoying harbour views.
Stroget Shopping
Return to the main pedestrian street for Danish design shopping. Visit Illums Bolighus for homewares, Hay House for affordable design, and Royal Copenhagen for porcelain (window shopping counts!). Lego Store is essential.
Rundetaarn (Round Tower)
Climb Europe's oldest functioning observatory via its unique spiral ramp - built for horse-drawn carriages carrying books. The view over Copenhagen's copper spires is magnificent in evening light.
Farewell Dinner at Host
End your trip at this cosy New Nordic restaurant in the Latin Quarter. Shared plates, natural wines, and peak hygge atmosphere. Book ahead - it's deservedly popular.
Copenhagen Prices
Copenhagen is expensive - budget £150-200/day for a family including activities, transport and meals. Supermarkets like Netto and Fakta offer affordable breakfast supplies. Many museums are free on specific days.
Where to Stay in Copenhagen
Vesterbro puts you near Tivoli and Central Station with excellent restaurants. Norrebro offers local flavour at lower prices. Indre By (inner city) is central but priciest. The Copenhagen Card covers transport, so staying slightly out saves money.
Family Accommodation
Generator Copenhagen offers affordable private family rooms near Central Station. Hotel Scandic Sydhavnen has a pool and free family bikes. For apartments, look in Vesterbro or Frederiksberg for space to spread out.
Getting Around Copenhagen
The metro runs 24/7 and covers most tourist areas. Bikes genuinely are the best option - dedicated lanes, driver awareness, and flat terrain make it safe even for families. Harbour buses are free with Copenhagen Card and scenic. Walking works for central attractions.
Copenhagen weather is changeable - pack layers, waterproofs, and comfortable walking shoes. Our packing list ensures you're ready for any Nordic weather.
